Easy Ways to Overcome Menstrual Pain

Recognize the Causes of Abdominal Cramps during Menstruation
Abdominal cramps can occur because the body changes during menstruation. During this period, the uterine wall contractions are stronger than normal. These contractions occur so that the lining of the uterus can drain menstrual blood.

When the uterine wall contracts, the uterus will also press on the blood vessels that line the uterus, so that it can cut off the flow of blood that is delivering oxygen to the uterus. The interruption of blood flow will cause low oxygen levels in the uterus, this condition then causes the tissue in the uterus to start producing chemicals called prostaglandins, which trigger pain.

6 Easy Ways to Overcome Abdominal Cramps during Menstruation
To overcome this discomfort, there are several easy ways you can do, namely:

1. Drink lots of water
During menstruation, you can prepare a bottle of water which is easy to carry for traveling. You can add lemon juice to it to taste and whet your appetite. Drinking water does not directly reduce the feeling of cramps, but it can overcome flatulence which can aggravate the feeling of stomach cramps that you are experiencing.

2. Eat the right kind of food
When you experience menstrual cramps, you can eat foods that are low in fat and rich in fiber, such as fruits, green vegetables, nuts, and whole grains. It is advisable to avoid fatty foods, fried foods, or fast food.

3. Warm compresses the cramp
Then you can compress and stick a warm towel or bottle filled with warm water to the cramped stomach area. Apart from relieving pain, this warm sensation can also make you more relaxed.

4. Pamper your body with massage
To treat menstrual cramps, you can gently massage the lower abdominal area in a gentle circular motion. You can add aromatherapy oil when massaging, which can make you feel more relaxed.

5. Move actively
Discomfort during menstruation may make you lazy to move, aka "mager". But, you have to fight it by actively moving or exercising, such as running, walking, or aerobics. By actively moving and exercising, the body can produce endorphins that can reduce pain and improve mood.

6. Take pain relievers
When you feel unbearable stomach cramps, you can take pain relievers, such as paracetamol. But remember, read the rules of use first. If you are in doubt, consult your doctor so that you can give the appropriate medication and dosage.

Menstrual cramps are normal. However, if menstrual cramps are very severe, it could be due to health problems, such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and uterine fibroids.

You can try the methods above to reduce cramps during menstruation. However, if the stomach cramps you are experiencing are very heavy, come on suddenly, are accompanied by fever, there are large blood clots, or vaginal discharge that is thick and foul smelling, you should check with your doctor.
